Organic Winter CSA Offered in Southport

logo1The organizers of the Organic Southport CSA have identified an opportunity to bring an Organic Winter CSA Share Program to Southport! CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and enables consumers to buy directly from farms for a specific season with pre-determined pick up dates.

Winter Sun Farms partners with local sustainable farms throughout the Hudson Valley to  to supply a wonderful winter share of great tasting frozen and storage vegetables all winter long.  This CSA runs for 4 months during the winter season and pick up is once a month at a Fairfield/Southport location TBD. By supporting Winter Sun Farms, members get great tasting food which helps keeps local farm families doing what they love, and what our communities need–preserving farmland and livelihoods for generations. Winter Sun Farms will deliver to Southport if they can sign up a minimum of 25 members by early November. Anybody who purchases a share will be granted priority wait list status for a  Spring/Summer/Early Fall 2010 share in the Stoneledge Farm Organic CSA run out of Trinity Southport Church.

Winter shares would include frozen items from the growing season  including tomatoes, blueberries, peppers, summer squash, raspberries, broccoli, green beans, butternut squash, edamame, fall greens, and blackberries; cellared root crops (potatoes and carrots); and fresh pea shoots.  Most of the farms providing the produce are certified organic; some of the smaller ones are not certified organic but are small un-certified organic CSAs or certified naturally grown.

The cost for the share would be $128.  The distribution would be once a month, for four months, on a Thursday afternoon (December 17th, January 7th, February 18th and March 11th) in Southport, CT.

Winter Sun Farms needs at least 25 members in order to add a Fairfield/Southport drop-off site.  Please let Sarah Bollman ( know as soon as possible if you are interested in participating.
