If you live in Redding, this is an excellent CSA, but you must sign up by February 29. Otherwise, enjoy the farm stand in season and all the farm’s special events.
Warrup’s Farm, Redding (Certified Organic)
11 John Read Road, Redding, CT 06896, 1.2 miles north of Redding Center, off Route 107.
Bill Hill of Warrup’s Farm doesn’t grow corn because “it’s a lot of work for very little money.” But he does grow organic peaches and when the crop is good, they’ll be included in vegetable CSA shares just as they were last year. Eggs are an add on rather than being included in shares because the “economies of eggs are very bad” said Bill.
Warrup’s does two things that are a bit uncommon in CSAs – they offer three different 5-week seasonal subscriptions in addition to a full 20-week CSA, and although they believe CSAs are a shared risk with the farmer, they reserve the right to supplement CSA shares with produce from outside the farm in the event of a crop failure. That does remove an element of risk for the buyer, but adds one for the farmer.
