 ‘New Oil’ Celebration Honors Italian Tradition with World-Class American Olive Oil

Fruity, pungent, and heart-healthy extra virgin olive oils from the November California harvest and pressing are here and Olivette invites the public to sample them at their First Annual ‘Olio Nuovo’ Celebration.

During this celebration of ‘new oil’, visitors to the Darien store can taste five varieties of the freshest California extra virgin olive oils available – Kalamata, Koroneki, Frantoio, Leccino and Organic Mission the same types grown in Italy, Spain and Greece. “In Italy, the much anticipated olive harvest and crush is celebrated with an annual festival and we’ve borrowed that concept to share these delicious, limited harvest oils from California with the public. I know these fresh, aromatic and flavorful oils – essentially fresh fruit juice – will change the way people think about olive oil” says Alina Lawrence, owner of Olivette.

California is increasingly recognized as a world-class producer of premium extra virgin olive oils, yet produces a small fraction of the 75 million gallons of olive oil consumed by Americans each year.

Lawrence recommends keeping it simple when serving ‘olio nuovo’. “These extra virgin olive oils are meant to be enjoyed just as you would Beaujolais Nouveau – while young and fresh – to ensure their delicate flavors remain intact. I love serving them in olive oil dipping bowls with slices of toasted crusty bread, a head of roasted garlic, and a bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau. It’s an easy and delicious appetizer that’s special enough for guests.” ‘Olio nuovo’ is also an excellent choice for making pesto and drizzling on salads, soups, stews, meats and fish.
