Seed to Harvest Workshops Begin at Wakeman Town Farm

By Analiese Paik

The seed catalogs have begun to arrive. Are they exciting you or making you sweat? If this is the year you’ll finally put in your first garden, there’s no need to go it alone. Wakeman Town Farm, Westport’s organic community teaching farm, is offering a “Seed to Harvest” series of gardening workshops to prepare you for success in your own backyard.

The first workshop starts on Sunday, March 3, and will teach you how to plan your garden. What should you plant where? Does it matter if the tomatoes are next to the basil? What is succession planting? Should I test my soil? Resident farmer Mike Aitkenhead will teach you everything you know to get started and future workshops will keep you on track to have the edible garden you’ve always wanted.

Workshop Descriptions from Wakeman Town Farm:

Sessions are limited to 20 participants and are available on a first-come-first serve basis. Register online at Parks & Recreation Programs and Activities (listed under “Wakeman Town Farm: Activities for Adults” at WTF Adult Activity Registration.)

On-site registration is available the day of each program, but space is limited.  Fee for on-site registration is $30.  For questions or for help registering? Please call 203-557-9195.

Planting a garden this year?  Starting your own seeds can save you money, provide a host of new growing options, and give you a head start on the growing season to increase your harvest.  But above all, starting your own plants from seeds provides a whole new level of appreciation and know-how as you embark on your growing endeavors.   In the second of the ‘Seed to Harvest’ workshops at the Wakeman Town Farm, instructor and Master Gardener Annaliese McCay will show you everything you need to know to start your very own seedlings indoors and will even get you started with a tray of seeds to bring home with you.
