My CSA from Sport Hill Farm won’t start until June, but farmer Patti Popp has been encouraging crop cash members to stop in to buy some spring greens in her farm market on the honor system. I finally made it there on a glorious sunny day last week to stock up on arugula, an arugula and mustard greens mix, overwintered scallions, and chicken eggs. Patti said she’d be harvesting spinach soon, giving me a great reason to return this week.
While Patti and I were chatting, Pat from Bar Sugo stopped in to buy the same greens for the restaurant’s menu. It’s wonderful to see a growing number of restaurants making the extra effort to buy from and support sustainable family farms in the area. I’m sure their patrons love it too.
Overwintered scallions, aka storm scallions, were a deep green and pristine. I chopped them and stirred them into cold noodles with sesame sauce that night. Yum!
A huge bed of sorrel caught my eye. Patti said she’d already cut it back once. A great perennial crop!
The herbs were looking great. Look for them at the counter.
