2013 Guide to Fairfield County Winter CSAs
by April Guilbault
It’s time to start thinking about winter CSAs here in Fairfield County. Many folks join CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) early in the growing season and sign on for subscriptions that last into the mid-fall. Given the increasing popularity of CSAs, some farms are starting to offer Winter CSAs, too. Can we all just give a big cheer now?!
Plenty of cold weather crops will keep you eating your veggies even as the months cool, as well as many meat shares, which could be just the thing to spice up the chilly months ahead. As with the summer and fall CSAs, you are investing in your local farmer, buying a share of their farm in return for a weekly portion of the harvest. If farmers are game to do this all year ‘round, why shouldn’t we support them?
Due to many people’s busy schedules, driving over to a farm might not be the most convenient thing. Luckily, there are a number of Farm-to-Door businesses that will do that for you. Some modern conveniences such as placing orders and paying online really do make life easier and better. Read more about Farm-to-Door services in Fairfield County here.
Between the fall shares and these farm-to-door delivery services, there is no longer any excuse for not eating local and seasonal all year long. You are supporting our local farmers who in turn spend their money locally AND getting the freshest, most nutritious and delicious farm-fresh food. That’s win-win-win for consumers, farmers and our local economy!
