Wakeman Town Farm’s Annual Family Fun Day
Sunday, July 13 from noon-4 p.m.
Price: $10 per adult. $5 per child
Wakeman Town Farm, 134 Cross Highway, Westport
Come on down to the farm for an afternoon of old-fashioned fun for all ages, open to the whole community. Horse around with the sheep, goats, chickens and ducks; tour the organic vegetable gardens; compete in the pie-eating contest, water balloon-toss, sack races, and lawn games, and enjoy face painting and farm crafts. Hungry? Enjoy a picnic lunch on the lawns or picnic tables, featuring grass-fed burgers from Craft Butchery, sandwiches and salads with greens from our organic gardens, lemonade, and assorted mini ice cream cones from The Farmer’s Cow, a cooperative of Connecticut dairy farms. Professional photographer Peter LoMastro will be out by the chicken coops, snapping pastoral family photographs as mementos of the big day.
Farm Steward Mike Aitkenhead says, “This is one of our favorite events of the year. It’s great seeing so many kids and adults out on the lawn having fun at the farm. Every year, new families in the area stop by and say they can’t believe they didn’t know that there is an oasis like this right in their midst. Many people pass the farm on their way to the sports fields and have no idea that it’s here. Wakeman Town Farm is at its best when the community comes out to enjoy the property, the people and the animals. If you have been meaning to pop over and see what goes on at the farm, this is a great day to do it!”
Wakeman Town Farm is a nonprofit organic demonstration homestead open to the public. The farm is a model facility created to educate the community about local, healthy food production, responsible land stewardship, sustainable practices and community service. Farm activities include educational workshops, student internships, after-school environmental clubs, children’s summer camps, growing organic fruits and vegetables, animal husbandry, and providing a farm stand and CSA pickup location.
