Honey Harvest & Tasting
Red Bee Apiary
Sunday, July 20, 2014
$85 Per person
This event is a once-a-year treat to experience a honey harvest and taste fresh honey straight from the beehive. Learn how and why honeybees make honey and about their essential pollination services for 80% of our fresh foods. We will gather at a communal farm table for a tasting flight of 5 US honeys from important nectar sources for our nation’s honeybees along with 5 perfectly paired accompaniments. A rare and special treat for anyone who adores honey! One bottle of honey and a signed copy of Marina’s book Honeybee Lessons from an Accidental Beekeeper are included – please only one per guest.
Join our group afterwards for Dutch dinner in Westport and a FREE concert by Jose Feliciano at the Levitt Pavilion. Tickets can be reserved at Levitt Pavilion
Red Bee Apiary events are opportunities to visit a working apiary and experience honey at its source. Beekeeper and Honey Sommelier Marina Marchese will treat guest to a tour of her Red Bee Apiary and Gardens, once the home of celebrity ballerina and author Gelsey Kirkland and dancing partner of Mikhail Baryshnikov.
Guest will gather at a communal farmhouse style table surrounded by our apiary and edible gardens to explore and taste single-origin honey. Learn how honeybees make this liquid gold we call honey, how terroir and nectar source determines a honeys color and flavor, and how honey is harvested and extracted from the hive. Most importantly – learn how to select quality honeys and identify adulterated and honey fraud in the marketplace.
Participants will be encouraged to engage their curiosity through discussions while learning how to identify flavor profiles in honey and their floral sources. Each menu is a carefully orchestrated “Tasting Flight” of single-origin local honeys perfectly paired with seasonal accompaniments: locally and estate produced – cheese, fruit, chocolate, olive oils, nuts, bread, spices or herbs. Guest will record their tasting impressions on the Honey Tasting score sheet based upon aroma, color, flavor, taste and pairings. Talk, Tour and Honey Tastings are truly the Art of Honey for all its culinary pleasures!
RSVP and pre-payment is required to reserve your spot. Guest are welcome to browse the apiary grounds and purchase Red Bee honey, Marina’s books, and other product offerings. All events take place outside in our apiary gardens; guest are encouraged to dress according to the weather.
