The Stand, an organic, vegan enclave started eight years ago on Wall Street in Norwalk by Carissa and Mike Hvizdo, has moved to SoNo in the new Ironworks complex adjacent to the Maritime Aquarium. The new space is modern, bright and inviting with lots of natural wood surfaces complemented by a white subway tile wall running the length of the counter.
A nook to the right of the street entrance sports a beautiful wooden table for eight and a floor to ceiling bookcase artfully displaying seasonal produce, cranberry sauce and apple sauce from the owner’s organic farm. All the furniture was generously provided by Lillian August.
The Stand is the perfect place to grab a healthy snack or meal, either to stay or to go. The menu includes a wide range of organic juices (including 3-5 day cleanses), smoothies, soups, salads, sandwiches, baked goods, coffee and tea. Vegetables from local farms and from Hideaway Farm, the Hvizdo’s organic farm in Hamden, are used to ensure customers enjoy the freshest and most nutritious food possible. Orders for Thanksgiving side dishes and desserts can be placed through November 23. Read the full menu here.
More exciting news: The Stand will be hosting pop up vegan dinners featuring farm-to-table chefs including Bill Taibe from leFarm, The Whelk and Kawa-Ni. Carissa Hvizdo told me “I always feel bad when eating at these chefs’ restaurants because the vegan choices are so limited. I want to enjoy their food, and so do my customers, so why not host dinners here where these traditional chefs cook vegan for an evening?” Be sure to like The Stand on Facebook, because that’s where these dinners will be announced and RSVPs accepted.
Street parking in front is limited, but ample metered parking is available across the street. The Stand has a second location in Fairfield at 87 Mill Plain Road in the Sportsplex Complex. Reach them at 203-873-0414.
