Black Rock Farmers Market Begins Second Season on June 20
The Black Rock Farmer’s Market (BRFM) is back for a second season! The market will be held every Saturday from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm on the field next to St. Ann Church on 481 Brewster Street. The mission of BRFM is to serve as a community gathering place where local and organic farmers, producers and artisans can offer fresh agricultural and related locally sourced products to the Black Rock community and surrounding area. With a strong focus on sustainability, BRFM educates people on the importance of good health and creates business opportunities for local vendors. (read our feature article from last year about the market here.)
Black Rock residents Michelle Margo and Karyn Leito created the BRFM last year and it proved to be a resounding success, running every Saturday from late June to October, and packed with people of all ages. This year the market will host a variety of vendors including Sport Hill Farm of Easton, Aradia Farm of Southbury, K is for Cookies of Black Rock, and Jane’s Good Food of Westport. There are many new and exciting experiences for market attendees, including more local farms, food demos and educational programs. The last Saturday of every month, visitors can shop for unique and creative items in the Artisan Market.
This year the market is planning a lecture series which begins on June 27th and features Michel Nischan, CEO, President and Co-Founder of Wholesome Wave in Bridgeport. Nischan was recently named Humanitarian of the Year by the James Beard Foundation.
Patti Popp, owner of Sport Hill Farm LLC, raves about the BRFM and says, “Entering its second season, this producer-only market is a community gem. The beautiful setting, music, people, and their passion fuel the weekly success of this amazing event. Great things are accomplished when like-minded people come together.”
Opening day will take place on June 20th, with plenty of family friendly activities including music from Rick Reyes of Bridgeport, honey tasting by Red Bee of Weston, and a Corn Hole Tournament from 4 – 8 pm benefiting the market. People can sign up in teams of two for $35 per person, spectators for $20 each, and kids for $5.The tournament price includes prizes awarded to the top two teams, and food and drinks provided by Barcelona Wine Bar of Fairfield.
