Winter 2012 Farmers’ Markets
Westport, Fairfield and Weston are hosting indoor winter markets for the second year in a row. A new indoor winter farmers’ market opens in February at the New Canaan Nature Center.
Winter Farmers’ Market at the New Canaan Nature Center
Visit the New Canaan Nature Center each Tuesday in February, between noon and 3 pm, to enjoy a winter farmers’ market in their cozy greenhouse. We’re told there’s a little indoor fish pond to keep the kids entertained. The market may extend past February, so we’ll keep you informed. Walter Stewart’s Market will be catering lunch. Come early to enjoy soup and a sandwich. Some indoor seating is available.

Westport Winter Farmers’ Market
On November 17 the indoor winter farmers’ market at Gilbertie’s Herb Gardens in Westport will open for another season with 22 vendors. Open each Thursday from 10 am- 2 pm through March 15, 2012, the market is a great place to buy a wide variety of CT Grown produce, cheese, meat and poultry as well as artisan food products. Fairfield Winter Farmers’ Market
Opening for the season on December 3, this market now offers pastured beef, pork and poultry products from Greyledge Farm in Roxbury and baked goods from Scratch Baking in Milford in addition to all last year’s vendors. Baker Lesli Flick from Scratch Baking is a SoNo Baking alum dedicated to using local, natural and organic ingredients as much as possible so we’re expecting good things!

Winter Farmers’ Market at the Norfield Grange
The winter farmers’ market at the Norfield Grange will reopen for the season on Saturday, November 12, from 10am to 2pm. This market offers shoppers more than a dozen vendors on opening day, and more will be joining in a few weeks. If you are interested in becoming a market vendor, please check that your products are complementary to those already offered before contacting admin@wintermarket-ct.com. Gazy Brothers Farm, an IPM, family-owned farm in Oxford, will again be offering a winter CSA that can be picked up each Saturday at the market. The fee for 8 weeks is $160, plus a $40 delivery fee. Click here to download a CSA application that includes the Fall/Winter CSA option.

This market opened in July 2011 thanks to the work of Bethel First Selectman Matthew Knickerbocker. The original Bethel farmers’ market is one of the oldest in the state and is listed below.

The Bethel Farmers’ Market is one of the oldest markets in the state of Connecticut. It was started over two decades ago by a group of farmers, most of whom still participates in the market. The market offers shoppers a wide range of products to choose from – beautiful plants, fruits and vegetables, soap and body products, baked goods, meats, eggs, handmade granola and awesome prepared foods. All of the vendors are located within 50 miles of Bethel, making it a truly local food experience.

Elite Fresh Nation Farmer’s Market opens on June 1 in the parking lot of the Danbury Fair Mall and will run Wed. and Sat. from 10-3 (hours were extended until 3 as of June 21) . The Fairfield Farmers’ Market at the Greenfield Hill Grange is the town’s third market initiated as the sole indoor winter market in 2010. The spring/summer market will have at least five vendors, including one organic farm. This is a producer only market and is being held outdoors. Join your favorite vendors and enjoy the sunshine while shopping local.

The Greenwich Farmers’ Market has been a popular and well-visited Saturday Morning event for over 15 years. Connecticut farmers travel from as far as Lyme and Roxbury, and many towns in between, to bring ocustomers the freshest produce and products. The market has 19 vendors this year, who generously donate to a weekly drawing — one lucky customer wins a full shopping bag of products from each vendor. The market is conveniently located right off Exit 3 on I 95, and easily accessible to both Connecticut and New York Shoppers.
