A Four Season CSA Farm: Oxford’s Gazy Brothers

Gazy Brothers Farm is a fourth generation family farm in Oxford offering a CSA for every season. The farm employs integrated pest management (IPM) growing practices, which means they use a sustainable approach to managing pests. They offer different pick ups and deliveries for each community they serve (see below), so please contact the farm directly for that information. Most communities have a farmers’ market where Gazy Brothers is a vendor and in-season pickups will be located there. Before the market season begins, shares will be dropped at your home.

Gazy’s Spring CSA fills up quickly and the deadline to register is February 28. This CSA runs from April 2- June 12, offering 10 weeks of fresh greens, cherry tomatoes, and much more. The cost for one box of 5-6 veggies per week for 10 weeks is $200.

Gazy’s Summer CSA runs from June 27- September 18, giving you 12 weeks of summertime fruits and/or veggies. Vegetable Share Options: 1 box of 7-8 veggies a week for 12 weeks is $250. 2 boxes of veggies per week for 12 weeks is $425. Fruit Share: 8-12 pieces of fruit per week for 12+ weeks is $100. Deadline: May 30. While the farm does not grow most fruits, they are sourced from neighboring farms in Glastonbury including peaches and nectarines from Belltown Hills Orchard, apples and pears from Bussa Orchard, and plums from Berrutti’s Orchard.

Fall/Winter Program (October 3-December 11): Enjoy the last harvests of the season, like hearty root veggies and greens. Note that it may not be consecutive weeks due to weather conditions. 1 box of 5-6 veggies and apples for 10 weeks is $200. Deadline to register: September 1.

BR Farm Stand Offers Multi-Farm CSAs

Nancy Earle is on a mission to bring fresh, local, affordable food to lower  Fairfield County communities. Farm to Community is not a new concept, but bundling multiple CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) programs to offer consumers a very wide choice of affordable locally grown foods  is a novel concept whose time has come. Nancy has just launched BR Farm Stand to do just that and the options are pretty fantastic.

This season there are two pick up locations for bi-monthly and monthly shares beginning the week of December 13: The Center for Green Building, 3309 Fairfield Ave, Bridgeport or 365 Lalley Blvd (corner Edward), Fairfield. The day of week is yet to be determined but hours are 4:00pm-7:00 pm.

New! Open House Saturday, December 11, 2010 from NOON – 3PM at the Black Rock Library to learn more about the CSA options and taste some of the offerings.

BR Farm Stand charges a $45 annual membership fee. If you already purchased a Winter Sun Farms’  CSA and were expecting to pick up at Trinity Southport Church, your new pick up address is BR Farm Stand’s 365 Lalley Blvd. location in Fairfield (no membership fee applies). If you decide to purchase any additional CSA offerings from BR Farm Stand, you will have to become a paid member.

Gazy Brothers Farm Offers Winter CSA Share

Gazy Brothers Farm in Oxford, CT is offering a 5-week winter CSA share of farm fresh vegetables and apples starting January 3 and will run through March 6. The share will include 5-6 items every other week including winter squash, pumpkins, hardy greens, apples, a variety of potatoes plus root vegetables like carrots, turnips, radishes, beets for a cost of $100 per share. Shares are delivered to customers’ doors by Gazy Brothers.

Gazy Brothers uses Integrated Pest Management (IPM) growing practices. IPM practices differ by farmer, but stress the avoidance of routine spraying and emphasize preventing crop damage while creating  “the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment”.

On Saturday January 23 from 10AM to 2PM the Norwalk Winter Farmers Market at 61-65 Wall St. on the corner of Isaac Street will have its first day of presenting local artists and artisans in its unique space. A space where other artists in the past have influenced the aesthetics of the space and where new artists of today will be able to showcase and expand on an already successful farmers market.

The Norwalk Winter Farmers Market is sponsored in cooperation by the city of Norwalk, POKO Partners, Stanley M. Seligson Properties, Fat Cat City, local residents, and Gazy Brothers Farm. The farmers market has become a weekly social gathering for friends and families in the Norwalk community, as well as visitors from afar. Products available at the farmers market include CT grown produce, farm raised beef, pork, eggs, Maine seafood, goats milk soap products, fresh baked goods, crafts.

The artisan space is sponsored in cooperation with the Norwalk Winter Farmers Market and the Norwalk Arts Commission and  is open to all mediums in the arts. Duvian Montoya states “I truly believe that if we put the energy into building this community and cultural market, we can create a venue to showcase the producers and creators living in Fairfield County. A market where people can distinguish who we are as a community.”

Currently there is space for about 8, 2D artists on a 10′ x 10′ chunk of wall and about 6 spaces for any 3D artists or artisans on a 10′ x 10′ floor space (more spaces to come). Painting and or creating on site is encouraged but not necessary. We are also open to other vendors who believe in the idea of building the community center.
